Signup to Help Out
The Alcon crew are the people that help to make this convention a reality and to make it enjoyable for all our members. If you're interesting in volunteering to help out, please read this page and then volunteer using the form at the bottom of this page.

Teams

  • Registrations & Accommodation

    - Based in the Bede Hall. Responsible for registering the members, and sorting out their accommodation arrangements.
  • Events Team 1

    - Responsible for running all of the events in the Quay Bar.
  • Events Team 2

    - Responsible for running all of the events in the Queens Building at the university.
  • Art & Industry

    - This team runs the Artist Ally and the Dealers room.
  • Video Gaming & Screening

    - Responsible for running the Video Gaming, and also checking up on the screening.

Crew Responsibilities

  • Attitude

    - Crew set an example for other members to look up to and follow. As such, you should follow the rules, be friendly, helpful to other members (not limited to when you're on shift!) and do their best to make Alcon generally awesome.
  • Committment

    - Crew ensure that this convention happens at all - and if a gopher goes missing or does not do their job, things can end up going horribly wrong. Each day is divided into two shifts of 9am to 5pm and 5pm to midnight (This may vary according to each team) - you (usually) pick one shift for each day. You MUST make sure to show up and commit to your shifts! Missing a shift without good reason on the day can result in you losing your staff status.
  • Availability

    - When you're not doing your shift, if you are not busy attending an event then we may ask you to lend us a quick-hand for 10 minutes with something.
  • Supervision

    - Crew are expected to help uphold the convention rules, and immediately contact the committee if something gets out of hand, where-ever it may be around the convention. This includes back at the accommodation. Gophers also act as accommodation supervisors/officers in this capacity.

Important: To re-itterate, a typical crew member will spend just under 50% of the convention working (ie: about eight hours a day). Don't sign up if this sounds like a bad idea!

Rewards

  • Free Entry

    - All crew are entitled to free entry and will also get Thursday night accommodation paid for if they volunteer to help out on the Thursday as well.
  • Experience

    - We are happy to provide a full reference which you can then use for your C.V and any work you may be seeking.
  • Involvement

    - Being on a staff team means that you work with the committee and others who are involved with Alcon. You are more likely to see what goes on behind the scenes, and you're just generally more involved in the convention.
  • Satisifaction

    - You're on the staff for Alcon and helping the convention be awesome! This is a lot of the reason why us committee and senior-staff commit so much time (no, not because we're crazy, and no, we don't get paid either!)
  • Food & Drink

    - A lunch (and/or dinner depending on your shift) is provided for you. Don't want to see you starving now!
  • Fun

    - As perverse as it may sound, being a part of the staff immediately puts you in with a group of friendly people to chill with. As long as you stick to what you're assigned to do when you need to, having this can make things a lot more fun than if you were just wandering around - of course that depends on what you as an individual prefer.
