Last Convention

Taking place at De Montfort University from the 7th-9th September 2007, Alcon '07 was a triumphant success. The final attendance was 202 members altogether across the three days. The main feature of the convention was the Pirates v Ninjas battle, which raged officially and unofficially throughout the convention. Everyone could join either side, and switch at any time through asking for a headband (black represented ninjas and red represented pirates). In the end, it was the Ninjas that emerged victorious, having vanquished the pirates by the narrowest margin in points.

We also ran a number of entirely original events in the UK such as the Iron Artist, Five Minute Cosplay, and the Cosplay Blind-Date. All were a resounding success, and proved very popular with the attendees.

Our guests for '07 were Akemi Solloway, who taught Japanese culture to the con-goers, David Bircham, who showed off his arts from his hit comic (and soon to be movie), Brodie's Law, and Hugh David from ADV. ADV were major sponsorers of Alcon, along with several other very generous companies who donated prizes and support.

"Apart from the fact that Alcon was my first ever Anime convention (My 37th con in total though not including Expos) I had an awesome time and didn't even lose my voice unlike my dear friend Amano Jako.

The cosplay costumes were stunning and a great deal of time patience and love has gone into them and you all really do deserve a great deal of thanks for making the place look as wonderful and colourful as it did, who knows maybe next year I can come down in my old SDF flight outfit.

It was also awesome to have the pleasure to meet up with Akemi Sollway and David Bircham two very wonderful and talented people who are very passionate about their love for art and culture and it was great to get the chance to sit down and chat with both of them when I got a moment (which was actually snatched between breathing breaks)

The highlight though was on Friday night when nearly a full third of the con was out around the quad having a great time and many photo chances where taken. Sitting around chatting about conventions with friends till 5am was a pretty foolish idea but man I would not have missed it for the world.

EvilJohnny my dear, dear friend did an awesome job on the Sunday night when we litterally pulled the disco out of thin air and he kept the dance floor buzzing till the wee hours, easily topping my efforts on Friday but then again I only had 12 cds to chose from and they were not my own!

Okay 4am here so I am off to bed, remember this though

"Where do I start with the fond memories? The first is waking up at 4AM (on the day of going to Alcon) and not being able to return to sleep very easy 'cos I was excited about the Convention! Second is meeting up with some people who my friends have been talking to on the forums and just glomping each other at first sight!

My second is just staring at the massive part of the merchandise room containing a large bookcase of Naruto manga as well as going mad and glomping several people who were cosplaying Naruto (including all my friends). In fact one guy was dressed up as Curse Seal Sasuke and I glomped him around ten times on the second day...I didn't realise that it was the guy who ran the Artist's Stall but still it was a fun time.

Third memory was the Arse Races that unofficially took place in Block C. Our arses are still sore. We had a huge tournament on the second night and the winner won £5 and the loser had to drink a concoction that one of my friend's made up. On the same night we had a second unofficial pyjama party and went to Sainsbury's in our pyjamas on a booze run and then went to the park nearby and gave ourelves wedgies going down the huge slide there (it actually wasn't that slidey that's why we had wedgies).

Fourth was the cosplay Blind Date. I was the Sasuke who got killed by the Itachi. I KNEW that everyone would vote for the Itachi (who was my friend that I'd come with).

Fifth and finally was the Masquerade. My friends who I'd met were the first ones who did a skit there (I loved the collective gasp when the Itachi was slapped, she bought a can of 7 Up after to cool her cheek down) and I was the Sasuke in the second one...where we taunted Gaara for being a "Wemo"

I'd like to thank all of you people for putting up with me if I glomped you or went totally fangirl on you and for making Alcon 2007 the most kick ass convention EVER! I really hope that there is a 2008!" ~ michikodarkkitsune

"Alcon for me was one of the best decisions i have ever made in my life. I loved the atmosphere and everyone was so nice! (especially all the other cosplayers who put up with me asking for pics) The best part for me was cosplaying, (Lana Skye, Roy Mustang and Hinata Huuga). The 5-min cosplay on the last day was hilarious.
